Since we are in the adoption process of an Ethiopian boy, we have been learning some about Ethiopian culture as well. Through our agency we discovered "The Athlete."
Abebe Bikila
“The Athlete” is a movie about a story of hope, determination, and true Ethiopian culture. It follows the life of Abebe Bikila, an Ethiopian runner who:
- was the first black African to win an Olympic gold medal, Rome 1960
- won while running barefoot!
- was the first runner to win Olympic gold medals consecutively, Tokyo, 1964
- served as a role model and hero for Ethiopians at this time
- Ethiopia's emperor, Haile Selsassie, respected him greatly
- many have called him Ethiopia’s greatest athlete of all time.
Movie Synopsis
The film portrays a man who loves his family, running and competing; however, when an unforeseen event results in serious injury, his dreams and life being turned upside down. Regardless of the prodigious obstacles Abebe encounters he finds a way to continue striving to reach new aspirations.
