Choosing Fonts

Blurb's article, though originally written for a narrow audience, really applies not just to authors and newsletter writers, but also to all of us who partake in the electronic revolution's writing of e-mails, etc.

Choosing a font involves working with all things text - their size, style, etc.  For example, here are Helvetica, Hoefler Text, and Bookman Old Style next to each other with the same information content in the same size.  Elizabeth and I tend to use Helvetica fonts, because they are easier and more pleasant to read and some of our friends have said they prefer it :-)
Blurb posted these 8 guidelines for choosing type:
  1. There is no right answer, but different people have different tastes
  2. Choose fonts that convey the essence of your message
  3. Legibility is not the same as readability
  4. Keep it simple
  5. Use contrast to make it pop: a) pick one font that contrast strongly with the rest of your design, b) use the display font sparingly
  6. Be open to alternatives
  7. Your page is a blank canvas...use it
  8. Don't be afraid to have fun
Read them in their entirety yourself, part 1 and part 2
