“Deadly,” because sin results in death (see Romans 6:23). In the case of Israel here, also premature, physical death. But “doubly” deadly, because the Midianite women—those involved in inciting Israel to sin but initially and disobediently spared by Israel—also were themselves condemned to premature, physical death (Num 31:17-18). What a warning to NT believers to cling to Jesus for the forgiveness of all our sins and the fulfillment of all God’s promises to us in Him!
