Importance of Discourse Analysis for Translation

“It’s not widows that you should steal from (but everyone else!)”

In the Kifuliiru language of the Democratic Republic of Congo, this could easily be the meaning that results when translating “Don’t steal from widows!” The only error in the translation of this sentence is the focus, or the most important word of the sentence. The translators have learned with the help of a consultant that they need to reorder sentences in order to have the correct focus and meaning.
